J.A. Brennan, as a member of a multi-disciplinary design team, developed the aesthetic design of a new overpass/lid structure that will connect Microsoft's north and south campuses. Aesthetic design themes considered include "High Tech," replicating forms of microchips on a large scale; "Northwest / Natural Systems," utilizing organic forms and lush plantings; and "Bicycle Capital," inspired by the importance of bicycles in the history of Redmond. The City of Redmond chose the Northwest / Natural Systems theme to guide the aesthetic design of the SR 520 Bridge. The Northwest / Natural Systems theme stems from the City¡¯s goal to create a sustainable city that prides itself on its protection of the native landscape. |

| The theme also stems from the design character of the Microsoft campus, which uses natural materials, roofs with large overhangs, strong building foundations and landscape courtyards. The new northwest campus plans incorporate four different northwest landscapes associated with the four new buildings within this portion of the campus. The concept for the bridge will make a strong link to the character of this newly planned landscape. | |||
