Eagles and ospreys soar overhead while salmonids feed and rest in the protected inlet at Herring's House Park. The shoreline park restores wetland within Seattle's industrial corridor, creating an oasis for wildlife. In 2002 J.A. Brennan Associates won the Waterfront Center's international Top Honor Award for this exciting park and habitat restoration project. The design developed by J.A. Brennan Associates required extensive grading of the site, restoration of the intertidal area from uplands, and re-grading of off-shore areas to create more productive habitat for salmonids. Shore protection was vital to the project: two dune spits create an intertidal area protected from the erosive impact of waves and deflect floating debris. Careful attention was given to creating a suitable substrate for the aquatic habitat and placing high and low brackish marsh plantings in the intertidal area for fisheries enhancement. Recreational development includes a small parking area, accessible paths, trails, an outdoor classroom area, a boardwalk, interpretive signage, and picnic areas. |
