The design for the Carkeek Park wetland and overlook site provides a rich and diverse experience for the park visitor while preserving and enhancing the natural environment. The accessible loop trail system immerses the visitorin a wide variety of environments including Piper's Creek and its associated floodplain, seeps, spring fed tributaries, emergent marshes, open water habitat, forested wetland and shrub/scrub wetland. These habitats serve as an outdoor ecological classroom which links the park's new interpretive center with the site.
Two wetland ponds within the existing wetland create a greater diversity of habitat. The Oxbow Pond is a focal point within the forested wetland, and is intended as a rearing habitat for salmonids. Snags and large woody debris provide improved fish and wildlife habitat and scenic natural structures for viewing.
