Shannon Slough has been impacted by over 75 years of industrial use, urbanization and pollution. Brennan Associates developed plans to restore select functions of the natural ecosystem, and recapture the slough as a greenway created for passive recreation, education, habitat restoration, and beautification. Portions of the slough in roadside ditches and in culverts are replaced with newly created meandering channels much like the historic slough configuration. High-flow and low-flow channels and marginal wetlands are developed for hydraulic diversity.
A diversity of native plant communities are created including upland, facultative and wetland. The plant material functions to stabilize slopes, shade the slough, provide a source of detritus for potential fish populations, and provides wildlife habitat. Interpretive signage is used as an educational tool about the restored and historic ecosystems.
